The Story Behind Darna: The Cosmic Phoenix

Early Inspiration

My fascination with Darna began after watching the original 1950s Darna film as a child. Growing up in a modest family, I couldn’t afford comic books, so the films became my introduction to the character.

Even then, I found myself wondering where Darna’s mysterious stone had come from, who Darna truly was, and why she already seemed to know Narda’s grandmother and Ding. Those questions stayed with me for many years.

At the same time, I was fascinated by the stars, distant galaxies, the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and the mysteries of creation. I often imagined how these ideas could become part of a superhero’s origin.

The Birth of Stellar

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, superheroes were very popular among children. As I became more interested in superheroes, I began imagining what kind of hero I would create if given the opportunity.

The next challenge was finding the right symbol for this new heroine.

At first, I considered the Dragon as her symbol. However, I wanted my superhero to be a woman, so I felt the Dragon wasn’t the right choice.

Then I remembered something my father once told me—that in mythology, the Phoenix was the counterpart of the Dragon.

That was the moment the idea finally came together, and The Cosmic Phoenix was born.

I named the heroine Stellar: The Cosmic Phoenix, inspired by the stars and the vastness of outer space. Since I didn’t grow up reading comic books, I created Stellar entirely from my own imagination.

Writing My First Trilogy

While I was in high school, I became involved in stage plays, drama activities, music, and singing. During that time, I also began writing stories as a way to improve my writing skills.

I eventually outlined a trilogy consisting of:

• Book I — Stellar: The Cosmic Phoenix
• Book II — The Seven Songs
• Book III — The End of the World

The mythology centered on the Primordial Phoenix Essence, which later split into the Seven Phoenix Essences. Unlike the current Darna mythology, these were not separate stones but seven primordial energies contained within a single sacred gemstone set in an Amazonian-style tiara.

Many of the signature visual, mythological, and power concepts that later became part of Darna: The Cosmic Phoenix first appeared in the original Stellar mythology. These included the flowing cape, the Amazonian-style tiara with its central gemstone, the Cosmic Plasma Fists, the Phoenix Wings, and the concept of the Seven Phoenix Essences existing together within a single sacred gem.

In its complete form, when all Seven Phoenix Essences were united within the Phoenix Gem, Stellar possessed extraordinary superhuman abilities, including immense strength, faster-than-light flight, and near invulnerability, making her immune to conventional weapons and even nuclear forces. However, her overall power depended on how many Phoenix Essences had been restored within the Gem.

From Stellar to Darna

Years later, I watched the Darna films starring Vilma Santos and also enjoyed the Wonder Woman animated television series.

As I watched Wonder Woman and learned about Supergirl’s extraordinary abilities, I realized that they were portrayed among the most powerful female superheroes. That made me think about my own character.

One day, a question came to mind:

“What if I gave Darna the cosmic mythology I had originally created for Stellar?”

That single idea became the foundation of Darna: The Cosmic Phoenix.

The original mythology of Stellar was gradually reimagined to fit the world of Darna. The Seven Phoenix Essences became the Seven Phoenix Stones, while the central gemstone evolved into the Primordial Phoenix Stone. Although the mythology was completely reimagined, many of the original visual concepts and core ideas from Stellar remained part of the new interpretation.

One of the biggest creative changes was reimagining Darna herself. Instead of being an alter ego, Darna became a separate consciousness who shares Stella’s body through the Primordial Phoenix Stone. This allowed both characters to exist as distinct individuals while remaining permanently connected.

This project has always been my personal tribute to the imagination that Mars Ravelo inspired in me as a child, while also giving life to an original mythology that had been growing in my imagination for many years.

Darna: The Cosmic Phoenix is my way of honoring a legendary Filipino superhero while sharing my own creative vision through a respectful, non-profit fan-made reimagining.
